What's the Difference Between a Headshot and a Branding Shoot?

June 15, 2026 in Resources

It's one of the most common questions we get, and it's a good one, because the two are often used interchangeably when they're actually doing very different jobs. Here's how we think about it:

A headshot is a portrait with a long shelf life.

It's a clean, professional image of you— typically head to shoulders, occasionally half body— that you can drop into a LinkedIn profile, a speaker bio, a media kit, or an email signature and have it feel appropriate across the board. A great headshot is versatile by design. It's not trying to tell a story about what you do or where you work, it's simply putting a face to a name, and doing it well.

Done right, a headshot can last you years. The goal is a portrait that's timeless enough to still feel current long after it was taken, which is why simplicity tends to serve headshots better than anything too trend-driven or location-specific.

A branding shoot is a different conversation entirely.

Where a headshot is about who you are, a branding shoot is about who you are right now; your aesthetic, your environment, your energy, and the story your brand is actively telling. These are the images that live on your website, your social media, your marketing materials. They're doing a lot of work, and they need to feel current to do it well.

Brands evolve. The spaces they live in— Instagram, LinkedIn, your website— are always changing, and the imagery that represents you needs to keep pace. A branding shoot gives you a library of fresh, cohesive content that reflects where your brand is at this moment in time. It's less about a single definitive portrait and more about building a visual world around who you are and what you do. We've seen firsthand how much this matters for clients who are always in front of an audience, refreshing that imagery regularly is less a luxury and more a necessity.

So which one do you need?

Honestly, sometimes both, and sometimes just one. If you're a professional who needs a polished image for your bio and you're not particularly active on social media, a headshot is probably the right call. If you're a business owner, entrepreneur, or creative whose brand lives online and you need a steady stream of content that feels like you, a branding shoot is going to serve you far better.

And if you're not sure, that's what the conversation before the shoot is for! We'd rather help you figure out the right approach than have you show up for something that doesn't fit what you actually need. Get in touch here and let’s talk it through :)
