We photographed a series of environmental branding portraits of Nicole Davies, Founder of Sovereign Seeds, on her farm in Caledon. This session truly reflected Nicole’s deep relationship to land, food systems, and cultural agriculture— values that sit at the heart of Sovereign Seeds’ work.
Sovereign Seeds is a national Indigenous-led organization dedicated to the revitalization of Indigenous seed and agricultural food sovereignty. Guided by Indigenous ways of being and doing, the organization supports communities in restoring, stewarding, and living their food cultures. Photographing Nicole within her own environment allowed the portraits to feel grounded, honest, and aligned with this work; shaped by land, season, and daily practice.
Nicole is Saulteaux-Métis (MMF citizen) and has spent more than two decades working in cultural knowledge revitalization, systems change, and food sovereignty. She is a farmer, seed keeper, cultural educator, researcher, and advisor, and her leadership spans community based education, seed rematriation, advocacy, and policy work. The portraits we created are to support her public facing roles— from speaking engagements and teaching, to professional profiles, personal branding, and social media— offering a cohesive and flexible visual library that feels personal and professional.
Alongside the portraits, we also photographed a selection of Sovereign Seeds’ seed varieties, styled in simple environmental setups. Rather than isolating the seeds in an e-commerce product forward way, the images situate them within natural materials and natural light, reflecting the understanding of seeds as living relatives with histories, responsibilities, and futures tied to the land they grow on. These photographs were created for use across Sovereign Seeds’ communications, education, and storytelling efforts.
This project reflects our approach to environmental portrait and branding photography: working on location, using natural light, and allowing real spaces to inform the story. It’s a way of creating images that feel respectful, rooted, and adaptable.
